The Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems (MPI‑IS) is a leading research organization located in Stuttgart and Tübingen that focuses on artificial intelligence (AI), including machine learning, computer vision, and robotics.

For this global organization that is pushing the boundaries of AI with cutting-edge high-performance computing, we are looking for an

HPC Systems Engineer (m/f/div) starting as soon as possible.

The position is part of the Central Scientific Facility (CSF) "Scientific Computing" (https://is.mpg.de/scientific-computing), which provides high-performance computing resources and expertise to enable cutting-edge research at the institute. The CSF Scientific Computing team - a tech-loving group that values openness, fresh ideas, and close collaboration - operates a state-of-the-art GPU clusters with more than 1200 GPUs, serving as a critical backbone for advancing groundbreaking research in AI.

Possible tasks include:

● Build, administer, optimize, and maintain Linux-based HPC/GPU cluster and storage systems for maximum performance and reliability.
● Support researchers with software setup, job scheduling, and system optimization.
● Implement security, data management, and scalable computing solutions in collaboration with research teams.
● Document configurations and provide user training and support.

Required:

● Strong Linux-system administration skills.
● Strong verbal and written communication skills in English to collaborate with teams and document technical processes.
● Problem-solving abilities and a collaborative, team-oriented mindset.
● Degree in Computer Science, IT, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Preferred:

● Familiarity with parallel computing, job schedulers, and high-speed networking.
● Experience with storage technologies (e.g., Lustre, BeeGFS, NFS).
● Knowledge of virtualization/​containerization (e.g., Docker, Apptainer/​Singularity).
● Automation and configuration management (e.g., Ansible).
● Programming and scripting skills (e.g., Python, C/C++, Bash).
