Comic: 'Sam and Twitch: The Brian Michael Bendis (BMB) collection is a sparkling detective/police procedural graphic novel. It features supporting characters from the 'Spawn' comic book, but don't let that put you off reading this.
Although BMB has gone on to re-imagine the Marvel universe to great effect I personally think that his earlier work is better. Certainly his work in here, Jinx and in Powers is superb. Although his work on Marvel's Alias deserves a special mention as a gritty look at the Marvel universe.Alias Ultimate Collection Book 1 TPB.
The book gets five stars for following reason. I was bought the first release of this book (entitled Udaku after the first story arc) and at the time it was reprinted in greyscale black and white instead of its original full-color format. This was intended to reflect the Crime - noir tone of the story.
Although the story is strong enough in terms of set up and dialogue the reduction of the tones and work in the backgrounds ( subtle images of police report sheets and the like are simply lost) dimishes the feel of the book and hurts the story.
Having re-read the story in all its glorious colour, it is a relevation!! I guess todd Macfarlane didn't think much of LA Confidential then.......
