Es ist durch Kreuzung aus mehreren Arten der Sektion Melanium ("Stiefmütterchen") der Gattung Viola entstanden, insbesondere aus Viola tricolor, einer in Europa und Westasien beheimateten Wildblume, die auch als Herzgespann bekannt ist.

P. J. Redouté (1759-1840) war ein Meister der botanischen Malerei. Er besaß nicht nur großes Talent, sondern auch Charme, denn er war Hofmaler von Marie Antoinette und Kaiserin Josephine.

The garden pansy is a type of large-flowered hybrid plant cultivated as a garden flower. It is derived by hybridization from several species in the section Melanium ("the pansies") of the genus Viola, particularly Viola tricolor, a wildflower of Europe and western Asia known as heartsease.

P. J. Redouté (1759-1840) was a master of botanical paintings. He possessed great talent as well as charm, as he was a court painter to Marie Antoinette, as well as the Empress Josephine.
